Put the verbs in brackets into the Past Simple or the Past Continuous.

Dear Elaine,
I'm having a great "time in Australia. Something amazing 1) … (happen) yesterday! We 2) … (walk) down by the sea when we 3) … (see) a huge whale lying on the sand. I 4) … (not know) what to do. Dad 5) … (run) to the phone box and called the coastguard. The whale 6) … (try) to move but it 7) … (be) stuck in the sand. Quickly, many people  8) … (arrive), and we all tried to help the whale but it was just too big to move! While we 9) … (talk), the coastguard 10) … (arrive) with a huge crane. In no time at all the crane 11) … (lift) the whale back into the sea. I think the whale understood that we were trying to help it because it 12) … (not leave) straight away. It swam up and down, waving its tail. It was an amazing experience that I will never forget!

Success Story by J. G. Cozzens          I met Richards ten or more years ago when I first went down to Cuba. He was a short, sharp-faced, agreeable chap, then about 22. He introduced himself to me on the boat and I was surprised to find that Panamerica Steel was sending us both to the same job.         Richards was from some not very good state university engineering school.
