I’ve been mad about surfing

summers with my grandparents. They drove me to the beach every day and my granny

Paul Miller is a journalist,

more time to read books and meet friends face to face these days.

§ 1. In the 1930s, when
radio was still in its infancy, broadcasting stations in the USA wondered what
type of programmes they should put on during the daytime. They came up with the
idea of producing serials that would be on the radio every afternoon telling a
continuous story. To keep the listeners’ interest, there would be far more crises
occurring than in real life. Knowing that the majority of the audience would be
women, the broadcasters decided that the women in the serials
would be strong characters
and the men weak. The serials were an instant success with listeners. As the
radio stations were paid for by advertising, these programmes always carried advertisements
and, since one of the most frequently advertised products was soap, the programmes
became known as Soaps or Soap Operas.
§ 2. It was really by chance
that the soap opera appeared in Britain. The BBC (British Broadcasting
Corporation) had no interest in producing this type of programme but during the
Second World War it was thought that the Americans should be shown how well the
British
people were standing up to
the war. For this reason, a soap opera was written for the North American
service of the BBC; it was called Front Line Family and showed how a typical
English family, the Robinsons, were living during the war. Some people in
Britain managed to hear the programme and asked for it to be broadcast for the
British audience. The BBC were unwilling to do this but finally agreed and
broadcast the programme in Britain, but changed the name to The
Robinsons.
§ 3. Some attempts at soap
opera began to appear on television in Britain in the mid-1950s but it was not
until 1961 that the first real soap opera appeared. The serial, called
Coronation Street, was about the lives of people living in a working-class
street near Manchester. Although the
serial was planned to run
for only thirteen weeks, it is still to be seen several nights every week and
almost every week has more viewers than any other programme on British
television.
§ 4. The BBC never managed
to produce a really successful soap opera until 1984, when it introduced Eastenders.
This programme is about life in an area of the East End of London. For a time
it had more viewers than Coronation Street and still rivals it as the most
popular programme on British television. There is a major difference between
the two programmes in that Eastenders concentrates on often rather depressing
realism whilst Coronation Street, although
having serious storylines,
always contains a strong element of comedy.

А25 Why did the
radio stations make women have the strongest characters in soap operas?
1) Because the audience
would be mainly female.
2) Because men usually have
weak characters.
3) Because women deal better
with crises.
А26 Why was the
name soap or soap opera given to these programmes?
1) Soap was often advertised
during the programmes.
2) Soap companies advertised
the programmes.
3) Soap was the only product
advertised during the programmes.
А27 Why did the
BBC begin to broadcast Front Line Family in Britain?
1) Because people in America
liked it.
2) Because the BBC changed
its name.
3) Because people asked to
hear it.
А 28 How is
Coronation Street different from Eastenders?
1) lt is funnier.
2) lt has a stronger
storyline.
3) lt is more like real
life.

§ 1. The Guinness Book of
World Records describes Ranulph Fiennes as the world’s greatest living
explorer. His expeditions include the first polar circumnavigation (кругосветное плавание) of the Earth and the first unsupported crossing of
the Antarctic continent on foot. An obsession with diet and fitness comes with
the territory, and for years Fiennes has finetuned (приспосабливать) his body to cope with the most inhospitable of environments
and the most stressful situations of physical hell. So when I read that this
model of physical fitness had gone and suffered a heart attack – not while planting
a flag in a no-man’s-land, but while boarding a plane – it came as something of
a surprise.
§ 2. So why bother exerting
(прилагать все усилия) all that effort if in the end survival turns out to
be a lottery? “Some people live a healthy lifestyle and are still prone to
heart problems,” health expert Alison Shaw explains. Genetics and family history also
play a crucial role in determining who will achieve longevity. “It could all be
a question of genes,” she says, “but then some people never have a trace of the
disease even though their family history would seem to make them prime
targets.” “We need to be very careful when we’re doing extreme sports or endurance
events,” says health expert Len Almond. “Extreme physical stress can impose almost
impossible demands on the body’s ability to recover. The physiological response
will be extreme … and how the body overcomes that is bound to leave some kind
of legacy (наследство).” So could Fiennes’ love for endurance events
have contributed to his
condition? “It could have had an effect, or there may be genetic predisposition
(предрасположенность),” says
Almond. “We haven’t done enough research in this area.”
§ 3. This is changing
though. Scientists are using athletes to answer questions about the effects of
extreme exercise on the heart. One group in Austria studied cyclists taking
part in a race that covers
230 km with an altitude
change of 5,500 m. They were interested in one particular enzyme, high concentrations
of which are found in those who have suffered a heart attack. The largest
increases of this chemical were seen in the youngest, fastest cyclists who had
trained the hardest. Similar increases in the chemical have been found
in competitors in triathlon and in cross-country skiers.
§ 4. Most of us will never
put our bodies to such severe tests. But if when you hear about someone like
Fiennes you ask whether exercise is worth it, I advise you to consider your own
priorities. Personally, I subscribe to the proverb: “Run not to add years to
your life but to add life to your
years”.

A25 What does the writer say in the first paragraph about Fiennes’
obsession with diet and health?
1) It was unreasonable even for
an explorer.
2) It had become more
intense with time.
3) It makes subsequent
events hard to believe.
A26 On the question of who will live longest, it seems that
1) genetic make-up is the
main factor.
2) there is no clear
explanation why some people outlive others.
3) lifestyle choices play
little part.
A27 What does health expert Len Almond imply?
1) Our bodies can cope with
intense physical stress.
2) We should allow a long
period of recovery after any physical exercise.
3) There is more to learn
about the effects of physical stress.
A28 Experts in sports medicine have
1) questioned the wisdom of
taking part in extreme sports.
2) found a common factor
among competitors in extreme sports.
3) discovered an enzyme
